About Early Years at Curledge Street Academy

At Curledge Street Academy, we understand the importance of early years education in laying the foundation for future learning success.

Through our nurturing environment and dedicated staff, we strive to create a positive and enriching experience for our youngest learners, setting them on the path towards a lifetime of learning and achievement.

Within our dedicated Early Years building, we offer an early year’s provision for children from 9 months called Little Thinkers. Then, for 2-year olds we have a nursery room called ‘Penguins’ and then another called ‘Seals’ for our 3 to 4-year-olds.

In our ‘Penguins’ room, children are supported by a team of experienced nursery assistants who guide them through their very early stages of development. With a focus on creating a stimulating and secure environment, our little Penguins have access to bright, spacious indoor areas and ample outdoor spaces where they can explore and learn through play.

In the ‘Seals’ room, our pre-schoolers are led by a qualified teacher working alongside skilled nursery assistants. Together, they provide a high level of support tailored to each child’s needs, while also preparing them for the transition into school. Our Seal’s room is designed to foster creativity, curiosity, and social development, ensuring that every child receives the best possible start to their educational journey.

We follow The Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum which ensures that we provide a high standard of education and care in the early years as well as support children’s development. The framework includes ‘The Characteristics of Effective Learning’ which are fundamental to our practice as they detail the ways in which children should be learning from their environment, experiences and activities.

  1. Playing and exploring – children investigate and experience things and “have a go”.
  2. Active learning – children concentrate and keep on trying if they encounter difficulties and enjoy their achievements.
  3. Creativity and thinking critically – children have and develop their own ideas and make links between ideas. They develop strategies for doing things.

We plan and guide children’s learning by reflecting on the different ways that individual children learn and ensure the environment, activities and experiences match these unique needs. Learning in the EYFS is playing and exploring, being active, and through creative and critical thinking which takes place both indoors and outside.
